The motives for the participation of diverse social classes and groups in the Civil Disobedience Movement are as follows:

1. Rich peasants:

Rich peasant groups like Patidar of Gujarat & the jats of Uttar Pradesh joined the motion because being manufacturers of commercial crops they had been hard hit by the trade depression and falling prices. The refusal of the government to lessen the revenue demand made them fight excessive sales.

2. Poor peasants:

They joined the movement because they discovered it tough to pay rent. They desired the unpaid rent to the landlords to be remitted.

3. Business classes:

They reacted in opposition to colonial rules that constrained activities because they had been eager to expand their business and for this, they wanted safety against imports of overseas items. The notion that Swaraj could cancel colonial regulations and change could flourish without restrictions.

4. Industrial working classes:

They did not take part in big numbers besides inside the Nagpur location. Some employees did take part in selectively adopting a number of the Gandhian programme like the boycott of overseas goods as part of their very own moves towards low wages and poor working conditions.

5. Women:

There had been large scale participation of women within the movement. They participated in protest marches against synthetic salt and picketed overseas fabric and liquor shops. Many went to prison.
