The Civil disobedience movement was a turning point in India’s independence movement. The following groups were involved for several reasons:
1. Rich peasants – They were not able to practice their age-old customs and were facing frequent interference from the British.
2. Poor peasants – They were oppressed by the Britishers. They were forced to pay large sums of money for their own produce.
3. Business class – Their businesses were shut down by the British and they were forced to sell their property.
4. Industrial working class – The middle-class people received meagre wages and had to live on a hand to mouth existence.
5. Women – They were harassed by British soldiers and often were left widowed because of them.
Rich peasants joined because being the producers of the commercial crops, Thevar hard hit by the falling price so they protested to fight against the high revenues.
Poor peasants joined the movement becuase poor people with no money found it very difficult to survey with the amount asked for the rent.
Business classes joined the movement becuase they want to protest against the colonial policies which restricted their and stopped their possibility of expanding their businesses.
