The class teacher divides the class into two groups
and asks them to perform the following activities
Group: Mix and crush iron fillings and sulphur
powder,
Group-l: Mix and crush iron fillings and sulphur
powder and heat the mixture strongly till red hot
(0) Name the material obtained by group 1 and
write its one characteristic

(i) What happens when dilute sulphuric
acid is added to the material obtained
by group IT?
(ii) Name the gas obtained on adding dilute
hydrochloric acid to the material obtained by
group I and write its one characteristic ​

0) The compound obtained by Group 1 is FeS:

Fe + SFeS

i) When dil. Sulphuric acid is added to Iron sulphide, Iron (II) sulphate and Hydrogen sulphide are formed:

FeS + H_{2}SO_{4}FeSO_{4} + H_{2}S

ii) The gas obtained is Hydrogen sulphide. It has a rotten - egg smell and it is very dangerous. It has a toxicity that can be compared to Hydrogen cyanide.
