5

Answer:

x = - 8 , x = 18

Step-by-step explanation:

This question deals with magnitude, or absolute value if you prefer. A one dimensional vector has two possible directions: positive and negative. A number that is 13 units away from 5 units could be 5+13 or 5–13.

We can show this more rigorously by constructing the equation:

|x−5|=13

x-5 represents the distance between the point we are trying to find and the origin, 5. The absolute value symbols show that we only care about the magnitude of the value. Take a circle for example: we can define it in a similar way: r(θ)=R where R is just some constant radius. This basically the same thing (radius of 13) except that we are in R (1D space) instead of R2 (2D space), so we cannot take advantage of a polar coordinate system.

Anyhow, to solve this equation, we have to consider the possibility that x-5 is negative and that it is positive:

x−5=13 and x−5=−13 .

Solving both of these for x yields:

x=−8,x=18
