Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, like water vapor and some other gases. What greenhouse gases do is to act as a blanket. Blankets act as thermal insulators: they keep your body heat trapped on the inside, while maintain thermal equilibrium with the outside. When you increase the amount of greenhouse gases on the atmosphere you make effectively the blanket thicker, thus more effective, and increase the temperature on the inside.
