James patrick Kinney's cold within thematizes our lack of feeling for other. In this poem the poet has tried to convey the lack of generous feeling in people's mind. As the first one refused to use her sticks because she noticed a black man in the group, she show racial prejudice.

The second one refused because he noticed a man who didn't belong to his church.The third one refused because he noticed a poor man in the group and thought that why to waste her stick to safe an idle poor. The forth one who was the poor man, he thought that why to use his sticks to save the rich people, he could have used his stick to keep the fire continue burning but he was jealous of the people who were richer than him. The rich man kept on sitting thinking about his wealth.The last one always did something for his own gain, since he had no gain in it, he kept his stick back.

At last the fire died and all the six people present there died.The all lacked generous feeling.

They didn't died because of cold outside but because of cold within their hearts.
