When magnesium bromide comes in contact with chlorine, the colour changes from white to brown.
• Magnesium bromide is white in colour.
• When it comes in contact with chlorine, chlorine being more reactive than bromine, displaces it from its compound, and forms magnesium chloride.
• Bromine separates out, which gives a brown colour to the solution.
• Therefore, the colour of magnesium bromide changes from white to brown on coming in contact with chlorine.
• MgBr₂ (white) + Cl₂ → MgCl₂ + Br₂ (brown)
