The colors of the spectrum can be recombined so as to give the effect of white light. This can be demonstrated by a simple experiment as follows:

  • Take 2 prisms and place them in such a way that one prism is inverted with respect to another.
  • Now make a beam of light fall on the first erect prism.
  • The prism will disperse light into seven colors due to the refraction.
  • These seven colors are then received by the second inverted prism.
  • The colors upon passing through the prism, get recombined into a white light and then emerges out from the prism.
  • Thus, the seven colors disperse and then recombines into white light.
