Human Eye

(C) iris and pupil

Pupil is the small opening in the iris.

Iris is the thin pigmented structure which regulates amount of light that enters into retina. It can contract and dilates. It also determines the eye color. It adjusts the size of pupil.

So, iris and pupil is responsible for admitting different amount of light into eye. The reason when we go from bright surrounding to dark room we initially are not able to see anything clearly because in the bright light pupil is small, and it needs to expand when in dark room.
