Answer:

lenth of larger square is 4cm and smaller square is 2 cm

Step-by-step explanation:

let side of smaller square = x cm

then the side of larger square = y cm

As per the question

                        x²=y

                        x²-y=0 .            equation 1

and                   x²+y²=20 cm²   equation 2

subtracting equation 1 from 2

                           y² - y = 20

                       y² - y - 20 = 0

Using middle term splitting method

                      y²+5y-4y-20=0

               y(y+5) -4(y+5) = 0

                 (y-4)(y+5)=0

              if y-4=0          if y+5=0

                 y=4            y=-5

since length can not be in negative

length of larger square is 4 cm and area is 16 cm²

length of smaller square is  x²=y

since y=4

                                              x²=4

                                              x=√4

                                               x=2cm
