common difference is a term related to AP now AP is a series of characters ( commonly nos )

where there is a fixed pattern .

for eg

3,5,7,9,11,........ this is an AP there is a fixed pattern here and that is every no is added by 2 to get the next no . now the diff bw every term is 2 hence common difference or d = 2 ...( d = 2nd no - 1st no ) hence d is simply the gap bw the terms of the pattern or progression ...

now another AP can b like : -3,-5,-7,-9,-11...

in this case the d has to b '-'ve

so ya the d can also b '+'ve as well as '-'ve depending on the sum given ...
