Most companies allow their employees to keep their miles.

For companies that require their employees to "give" their miles to the employee, there are a lot of practical problems:

  • Most frequent flyer programs do not allow the account holder to sell miles to a third party. If they catch you, the miles are seized, and the account closed.
  • Transferring frequent flyer miles from one account to another is permitted but the fees are hardly worth it: the fees are similar to the cost of buying miles outright.
  • Airlines generally prohibit a passenger from having multiple frequent flyer accounts for this very reason.
  • Some airlines prohibit redemptions to anybody with a last name different from the account holder. So the employer would not be able order John Smith to redeem his miles for coworker Jenny Jones.

Employers are better off negotiating airfares with airlines that do not earn frequent flyer miles.
