Concept of "omnis cellular - e - cellula :

• mathias schleiden, German botanist on examining a large number of plants observed all plants are made up of different kind of cells which forms different types of tissues in plants.

• theodre Schwann, British zoologist studied animal cell and discovered plasma membrane (outermost layer in animal cell) and proposed animals and plants are made up of cells and products of cells.

• schleiden and schwann together formulated cell theory but was not able to explain how new cells were formed.

• rudolf virchow explained that cells divide and new cells are formed from pre existing cells and modified the postulates of schleiden and schwann to give cell theory.
