Born in 1675, Tarabai was the daughter of Hambir Rao Mohite, the famed Sar Senapati (commander-in-chief) of Shivaji’s Maratha army.
During the same battle, the new Maratha king — Rajaram (Shivaji’s second son and Tarabai’s husband — managed to escape from Raigad using a disguise. He eventually made his way to the Gingee fort (in present-day Tamil Nadu), before setting up court at Satara. However, in yet another blow to the Marathas, he passed away due to lung disease in 1700 after an extremely short reign.

The conflict between Chhatrapati Shahu and Maharani Tarabai happened for the Maratha throne.
Explanation:
- Maharani Tarabai happened to be daughter in law of Shivaji Maharaj with the youngest son Rajaram, whereas Chhatrapati Shahu was the son of Sambhaji who was the eldest son of Shivaji.
- Death of Shivaji brought chaos within the Mughal army and Sambhaji who led Marathas for nearly a decade was captured along with his wife, where Sambhaji was put to death. And his wife and son Shahu was taken as hostages to the Mughal court.
- This capture was escaped by Rajaram and Tarabai using a disguise however he passed away within a short frame of time due to lung cancer. Tarabai took over the reins of Maratha kingdom After Aurangzeb's death, Shahu was released craftily to divide the marathon leadership by sending a new claimant to the throne.
- Shahu upon releasing from jail claimed for the throne but Tarabai refused to it fearing the impact of his Mughal upbringing on her reign. This dispute turned into a battle however he succeeded owing help from chieftain sent by her along with Peshwa Balaji diplomacy and Mughal.
