Germany lost to the allies in WW1 and suffered huge territorial losses giving away its land and population to Poland, Russia, France, Belgium an Denmark and ultimately had to sign The Treaty of Versailles.
Terms of the treaty were:
1. All overseas colonies were to be handed over to the League.
2. Germany’s army had to be reduced to 100,000 men
3. Germany’s navy was reduced to 6 battleships with no submarines
4. No air force was allowed
5. Western Germany was to be demilitarized.
6. Germany was forbidden to unite with Austria.
7. Germany had to accept the "War Guilt Clause" and pay reparations.

The Germans felt that the treaty was very unfair to their nation and this led to the rise of Hitler and also eventually WW2.
It gave a young nation a very hard lesson in 20th century politics. Bismarck’s vision of a united, powerful Deutschland in 1870, had by 1914 been twisted by Kaiser Wilhelm II into a direct bid for hegemony over Europe. The Kaiser saw Austria’s quarrel with Serbia as an opportunity to expand Germany’s influence. The French (and their British Allies) found themselves honouring treaty obligations they were probably barely aware of. Europe was at war, and most people thought it’d be over by Christmas 1914. Well, it wasn’t - it dragged on for almost 4 years longer, and by November 1918 everybody (the Germans, in particular) had had enough of it. An Armistice was signed. Germany suffered particularly badly because of the iniquitous Treaty Of Versailles. The reparations demanded by the Allies gave the German economy no chance to recover from the ravages of war. It gave Germany its first experience of Republican rule, as the Kaiser abdicated after the War. It also gave Germany political turmoil, culminating in the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. So I’d have to say that World War I affected Germany badly. Very badly.

In the short term effects where horrible. So many civilians and soldiers died in the war and the economy was on their knees. Due to reparations to the allies economy went down even further and the jobless rate was incredible high. People were going to bed hungry because they couldn't afford to pay for food because the money was losing quicker in value than the government could actually print it. Also Germany had to take responsibility for starting the war. This made a lot of people angry since they didn't think it was their fault. The worst thing is though that this war, or more less losing the war did set the breeding ground for the Nazi regime.
