The constitution was adopted by the constituent assembly of Indian on 26th November  1949. However it came to effect on 26 January 1950, a day selected for its historical significance. At the Lahore session of congress in December 1929 it was decided that 26th January would be celebrated as the the day of Purna Swaraj or the day of complete independence.
