The Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation after they governed for only a few years because the people expressed a need for a stronger central government. There is still controversy today over which entity, state or nation, should hold the most power in our lives. Based on what you have learned about the Articles of Confederation, what are three advantages that have resulted in the creation of a stronger central government? What is one of the disadvantages?

Answer:

It allowed colonists to experience free movement. There was no need to carry papers or apply for a visa when traveling throughout the United States. This constitution helped establish borders and honor each state's sovereignty at that level, but also declared that the colonists were Americas, free to go to whichever state or colony they wanted.

The Articles of Confederation had three advantages.

1. It permitted colonists to move about freely. When travelling across the United States, there was no need to carry papers or seek a visa. This constitution aided in the establishment of borders and recognised each state's sovereignty at that level, but it also declared the colonists to be Americans who were free to travel to any state or colony they desired.

2. It promoted trade. Trade and other financial opportunities were fostered within the Articles of Confederation, which established a confederacy of states. Instead of looking for services or goods on the international market, this constitution encouraged states to collaborate so that everyone benefits. This promoted increased cooperation.

3. Making modifications to it required an entire agreement. Any changes to the articles would require unanimous approval from all 13 states. This ensured a level of governing uniformity that could be relied upon by all.

The Articles of Confederation had the following disadvantage.

Everything took a long time to come together. The Articles of Confederation were riddled with flaws. In order to avoid having a king, that constitution didn't have much of an executive branch. The federal government lacked the authority to impose laws on the states. Finally, congressional leadership had little impact.
