The Damodar is often called the sorrow of Bengal because it submerges major areas of land during high rate of floods.

During the rainy season, the Damodar river overflows and major land banks and the adjoining areas get flooded with excess water that also devastates both food crops and cash crops.

This causes major damage to the industrial areas also, and that is the only reason why the river Damodar is called the sorrow of Bengal.
