The Damodar River was referred as Sorrow of Bengal because of the devastating flood it brought to the region in the past. This led to sedimentation in the Hooghly river which hampered economic activities for the Kolkata port.

The Damodar River Valley Project was set up in 1948 to control flood and other issues related to it in the region under the initiative of the Central Government along with the State Governments of West Bengal and Bihar.

DVC( Damodar Valley Project) not only helped in controlling flood but also played its part in the field of irrigation, generation, transmission and distribution of electricity along with economic well being of the people residing in the nearby region.

The four dams built are one on  the Barakar River, the Konar River, Maithon  and Panchet .
