Usually all the metals Shrink or Contract during solidification or when they cool. So in order to compensate the reduction in volume after cooling, contraction allowance is provided.

Contraction allowance or metal shrinkage is basically two types:

One is liquid shrinkage, which is reduction in volume when metal changes from liquid state to solid state.

and the other is
solid shrinkage which is nothing but reduction in volume when temperature of a metal decreases when it is in solid state.
