The coordination number of Y in XY type of crystal is either eight, six or four.

Explanation:

  • XY type of crystal structure is seen in sodium chloride, ceasium chloride and Zinc sulphide.
  • Sodium chloride has a f.c.c structure and the coordination here is in the ratio 6:6
  • In ceasium chloride, the arrangement is b.c.c and the coordination is in the ratio  8:8
  • Zinc sulphide have either sphalerite or wurtzite structure.
  • Eventhough the structure of zinc sulphide in either cases are different, coordination is in the ratio 4:4
  • So if a crystal have XY type structure, the coordination number of Y can be six, eight or four.
