The relationship between alpha and beta refers to bipolar transistors. Alpha is the ratio of collector current to emmiter current and usually close to one. Beta is the ratio of collector current to the base current and is usually a large number (50–1000) Because emitter current is the sum of collector current and base current one can derive a relationship between alpha and beta :

 \beta = \alpha \div (1 - a)
