The cost of a notebook is 10 less than three times the value of a pen. The sum of cost
of pen and notebook is rupees 50. Find the cost of pen and notebook.

The cost of pen is Rs. 15 and the cost of notebook is Rs. 35  

Given:  

The cost of a notebook is 10 less than three times the value of a pen.  

The sum of the cost of the pen and notebook is Rs. 50.

To find:

The cost of the pen and notebook  

Solution:

Let x be the cost of the pen and y be the cost of the notebook

Given that, the cost of a notebook is 10 less than three times the value of a pen, convert this statement into a mathematical expression

=> y = 3x - 10 ---- (1)  

Now the cost of pen is x and the cost of notebook is 3x - 10  

Given sum of cost of the pen and notebook = Rs. 50  

=> x + 3x - 10 = 50

=> 4x = 50 + 10  

=> 4x = 60

=>  x = 15

=> cost of Notebook, y  = Rs. 15  

From (1)

=> y = 3(15) - 10

=> y = 45 - 10

=> y = 35

=> cost of pen = Rs. 35

Therefore,

The cost of pen is Rs. 15 and the cost of notebook is Rs. 35
