Given :   cost of an electrical gadget and the cost of a plumbing material were in the ratio 8:6 last year. This year, each cost was reduced by 4.00 and has changed to 7:5 respectively  

To find :  initial cost of the electrical gadget  &  plumbing material

Solution:

cost of an electrical gadget  = 8x = p

cost of a plumbing material = 6x   = q

each cost was reduced by 4.00

cost of an electrical gadget  = 8x - 4

cost of a plumbing material = 6x  - 4

New ratio  7 : 5

=> (8x - 4)/ (6x - 4)  = 7/5

=> 5(8x - 4) = 7(6x - 4)

=> 40x - 20 = 42x - 28

=> 2x = 8

=>  x = 4

p = 8x  = 8 * 4 = 32

q = 6x = 6 * 4  = 28

initial cost of the electrical gadget  p = 32

initial cost of the  plumbing material  q = 28
