The taste buds cover the tongue and react to chemicals in food.

  • The taste receptor cells are sometimes denoted cells which are known as gustatory cells. These are found in the taste buds on our tongue. On the topmost surface of our tongue, papillae is a structure that is present and it encloses the taste receptors. The five components of perception of taste are saltiness, sourness, bitterness, sweetness are successfully detected by these tiny structures on the tongue.
  • A common misconception makes us assume that these various flavours are present in specific areas of the tongue, but in actuality, every part of the tongue has the ability to detect all tastes. Food particles dissolved in saliva come in contact with the taste receptors through holes that are tiny, in the tongue epithelium called taste pores. These are found on top of the taste buds, which are made up of taste receptor cells.

Hence, the taste buds cover the tongue and react to chemicals in food.
