This poem illustrates the fickle mindedness of the crowd .

The crowd welcomed the patriot a year ago like he was a hero and worshipped him when he came back after his grand victory . His path was strewn with roses and myrtles. The church bells were rung in his honour but just after a year they arrested him for a so called misdeed and took him to the gallows . They are the same people who once worshipped him and now are gone to the shambers gate to have the best possible view of his death or execution .
