The crystalline salts of alkaline earth metals contain more water of crystallization than the corresponding alkali metal salts. Why?

Alkaline earth metal salts have M2+M2+ ions which has very high

polarising power compared to polarising power of monovalent

metal ion (M+)(M+) of alkali metal Due to high polarising power of

M2+M2+ , it associate more water than M+M+.

- This decreases hydration energy for formation of crystals in alkaline earth compounds.
- Hence, crystalline salts of alkaline earth metals contain more water of crystallization than the corresponding alkali metal salts.
