The Cultural Revolution in the People's Republic of China was a struggle for power within the Communist Party. It was launched by the Chairman of the Communist Party of China, Mao Zedong, on 16 May, 1966. He sought to dismantle the complex governmental structure that had developed after the Chinese Revolution of the 1940s. He organised China's urban youth into groups. Many art works, architectural treasures and other cultural monuments associated with the pre-communist China were deliberately destroyed by these groups. What were these groups called?
