It is because they have resisting powers to protect us from chemical reactions, electric shocks, etc.

its because well every single thing has different reasons..
like curtains r thick because u know there r some reactions which can be ruined in sun rays .
if we talk about other things they r often used thick in case if those r attacked by acid.. like it can get holes... so as it doesn't get too affected that it become un usable .. or think of those can protect us from shocks or even from chemical experiment fails.. thats it i knew.. hope it would help you
