The custom of calling a person gogoi, or belonging to the gogoi or the sogoi clan begun from the time the Ahom King, Swargodew Rudra Singha .
During the reign of this Ahom king, the clans of royal lineage started to increase in numbers.
Hence , it led to the growth of the gogoi clan, which was their name.
