The custom of sati was done away by the Governor-General Lord William Bentinck during the British period. Raja Ram Mohan Roy started the campaign against the heinous Sati Pratha in 1812.
In 1829 the Bengal Sati Regulation Act was passed by Lord William Bentinck.
Under this act, the immolation of Hindu widow on funeral pyre of her dead husband was declared as illegal.
