Explanation:
Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful
feelings recollected in tranquility.”
(Wordsworth 1798)This paper is an attempt to see whether the theorist of the poetic theory has an experience ofthe sort in his poetry or not. If he has then in which of his poetic works, and in what process thepoet experienced it.In the definition of poetry quoted from Wordsworth has got four stages in the process of itscreation. Many critics do adhere to this theory of poetic creation. The stages are thus
‘recollection’, ‘contemplation’, ‘recrudescence’
or
‘
the renewal of original emotion
’
and
‘composition’.
In the first stage which is actually the result of observation before the creation of poetry thepoet sees something and that thing remains there in his mind. At some other occasion herecalls the stored memories of the past. This recollection of thought results in the second stageof the process of poetic creation which is contemplation. In this stage the poet contemplateshis observation and thinks over it in its depth. During the contemplation the poet gains a powerto abstract things out of the same stuff which cannot be taken from it by anyone else. This newabstraction from the old stuff excites the poet and the third stage of the poetic creation starts. The poet renews the emotion experienced in the past and once again he feels like the previousoccasion. As a result the poet is overjoyed and the overflow of emotion starts which leads tothe final stage in which poetry is composed. The poet now wants to share his joyous experiencewith other people as well.
