Dams are constructed for controlling wildly flowing rivers which cause floods. Dams harness the flowing river water to generate electricity, to store water in dam reservoirs for later use in agriculture etc.

However, if this is not controlled effectively, it can lead to floods and large-scale loss to life and property. The reservoir has to be kept filled to an optimum capacity and water released from time to time. When this is not controlled properly, it can result in floods, when excess quantity of water has to be let out of the reservoir.
