The dark bands (Black bands) (A-bands) of a skeletal muscle are known as Anisotropic bands.
* The myofibril of skeletal muscles have two bands:
1. Isotropic bands( I bands)- lighter bands consisting of thin actin filaments and no thick myofilaments.
2. Anisotropic bands( A bands)- dark bands consisting of thick myosin filaments.
* The myofibrils are therefore formed of actin and myosin filaments, which appear as dark or light depending on the refraction of light.
* The centre of the I band is formed by the Z line( containing the anchor protein α-actinin) whereas the centre of the A band is formed by H zone and M line having the required enzymes.
