Dark zone of candle flame forms - (a) Region around the wick.

There are three zones near burning wick of a candle. The three zones are namely, non luminous zone, luminous zone and dark zone.

Non luminous zone is the outermost region with highest temperature. This is due to excess of oxygen availability.

Luminous zone is the middle region with moderate oxygen supply, hence soot formation occurs in this zone. Soot is partially burnt carbon particles.

Dark zone is the innermost region with no oxygen supply. It is the zone with least temperature and this region contains unburnt vapours.
