Filtering the data refers to viewing only selective data that satisfies a given condition.

  • Excel spreadsheets allow us to store a large number of rows and it may get inconvenient to view and analyse the entire data in one go.
  • Hence, Excel provides us the facility of specify certain conditions and filter the data for viewing only those rows that we require. Applying filters helps us to narrow down the records for effective and more efficient analysis.
  • In order to apply a filter, go to the Data Tab--> Sort & Filter group--> Click on the Filter command. This will introduce drop downs on the header row columns.
  • Further, we need to go to the column on which the filter is to be applied--> click on the drop down to invoke the filter menu. In the filter menu, we can specify our conditions. Click on 'OK' to apply the filter condition on the data in the spreadsheet.
  • Alternatively, the Sort & Filter command can also be located on the Home Tab, in the Editing group.
