The death of the husband of Queen Victoria prompted her to wear black for 40 long years after his death.

It became a sort of funeral dressing standard of that time as well as for ever so that people wear black to a funeral service still today.

Mourning has always been associated with grief and sorrow and hence black rightly represents that mood which was amplified by the Queen and became a standard for all times.
