EXPLAINATION

Part 1 -Start - Mughal empire, lasted for almost three centuries, it was established by Babur who came from farghana, modern Uzbekistan. Babur lost his kingdom when he wanted to expand his territory and was homeless. He came to kabul on invitation, and finally to Panipat, again on invitation and ended Lodhi reign and became emperer of india.

Part 2- Glory -It was his grandson,Akbar, who really expanded and stabilised mughal empire. He expanded to east and south. He established his rule in Afghanistan and befriend Rajputs; who became strong foundation for empire.

Jahangir added to glory of empire and in shahajahan's time new buildings came up and mughal empire was at its zenith.

Part 3- Beginning of End -When Aurangzeb dethroned his father and killed his brothers and became emperor, mughal empire was richest in the world. Aurangzeb, a puriton was charged with crazy idea of converting complete india into islamic kingdom with rule of sharia. In his times he was richest person and his empire was richest in world. India contributed to 25% of world GDP. He was most powerful emperor ruling largest land mass in the world.

He was not as prudent as his grandfather Jehangir, nor as tolerant as his great grandfather Akbar. He had no interest in any worldly pleasures, he taxed hindu and muslims alike, jizia for hindus and jakat for muslims, this all alienated him from his people. He was hated by, hindu and muslims, he destroyed hindu temples and shia mosques. He treated Shia muslims with great disdain though his forefathers enjoyed patronage and support of shia Iran. He ruled with iron hand taking nobqody in confidence and nobody confided in him, too. He was most feared.

He opened many war fronts, with Afghans, Marathas, Sikhs , there was revolt against him from his prince , with help of Rajputs.

Newly founded kingdom of Marathas, formed by Shivaji became thorn in his flesh. After death of Shivaji, he came to maharashtra to destroy kingdom of Marathas, he could capture their king Sambhaji , tortured and killed him, but victory became elusive . Marathas hitherto scattered came together and fought with Aurangzeb with whatever they had. This war took 27 years, wealthy empire was broke, lost all resources and strength.

Killing of Sikh Guru Teghbahadur, converted, peaceful Sikhs, into warrior clan. Under leadership of Guru Gobindsingh, Sikhs resisted mughal rule in punjab.

When Aurangzeb died far away from Agra, there was no close kin of him near him. He was all alone, he uttered his last words, as if, guided by divine, “ all along god was with me, but I didn't see him.” He was buried in Aurangabad and tomb was built, very simple and unattractive like his personality.

Part 4- End - From 1707 onwards Marathas became very powerful and till 1818, that is till end of Maratha kingdom, they decided who would be emperor. Maratha empire is loose term coined, it was actually, maratha Confederacy. It was empire without emperor, Marathas took role of protecters of mughal empire. How they did it and what was their policy is another story.

In 1857, after revolt, British brought an end to mughal empire, and from then till 1947 it was British empire which ruled india.
