The deepest part of the oceans in the world is the Mariana Trench in the Pacific
Ocean. It is 11,000 m deep. How long will it take for sound transmitted by a ship
from the surface of water above the trench to be reflected? (Speed of sound in
seawater = 1500 m/s)

Answer:

Let's take distance to be 22,000m because it has to travel back.

Speed = 1500m/s

Time = 22000/1500 = 14.6s

The time taken is 14.7 seconds.

Given - distance and speed

Find - time taken for reflection of sound

Solution - To find the time taken for reflection of sound back to the ship, we will take distance as twice. One for reaching the trench from ship, second for reaching to ship from trench.

Distance = 2*11000

Distance = 22,000 m

Time = distance/speed

Time = 22000/1500

Time = 14.7 seconds.

Hence, time taken for sound to reach the ship is 14.7 seconds.
