It is wider than Western Coastal Plain because the rivers like Godavari, the Krishna and the Kaveri formed the delta over there. The continental shelf extends up to 500 km into the sea, which makes it difficult for the development of good ports and harbours.

West rivers form estuaries and eastern rivers form delta. Therefore it becomes very difficult for the ships to reach to the east coast which is fully covered with sediments. As continental shelf on east extends upto 500kn into sea so it is the main reason why the eastern coast are not suitable for many harbour.
