Given:

  • The denominator of a fraction exceeds by the numerator by 4.
  • If 1 is deducted from both the numerator and denominator.
  • Fraction will be 1/2.

To Find:

  • Find the original fraction

Solution:

Let the numerator be x and denominator be x+4 respectively.

According to the question —

 \sf \implies \: \frac{x - 1}{x + 4 - 1} = \frac{1}{2} \\ \\ \sf \implies \: \frac{x - 1}{x + 3} = \frac{1}{2} \\ \\ \sf \implies \: 2(x - 1) = x + 3 \\ \\ \sf \implies \: 2x - 2 = x + 3 \\ \\ \sf \implies \: 2x - x = 3 + 2 \\ \\ \sf \implies \: x = 5

Hence,the value of x is 5.

Therefore —

  • Fraction will be = x/x+4 = 5/5+4 = 5/9
