Correct question :

The denominator of a Rational number is greater than its numerator by 8. Numerator is increased by 17 and Denominator is decreased by 1, the number obtained is 3 / 2. Find the numbers?

Solution :

Given :

  • The denominator of a Rational number is greater than its numerator by 8.

  • Numerator is increased by 17

  • Denominator is decreased by 1

  • Number obtained is 3 / 2

To find :

  • Find the number

According to the question :

  • Let the Numerator be ' n '

It is given that, Denominator is greater than the numerator (n) by 8

  • Denominator will be ' ( n + 8 ) '

We know that, a fraction is Numerator (n) / Denominator (d)

  • The number will be = n / n + 8 ...... (1)

Then, Numerator increased by 17. Numerator was (n)

  • n + 17

Denominator decreased by 1, already the denominator = ( n + 8 )

  • ( n + 8 - 1 )

Equation would be,

⟹ n + 17 / ( n + 8 - 1 ) = 3 / 2

⟹ n + 17 / n + 9 = 3 / 2

⟹ 2 ( n + 17 ) = 3 ( n + 7 )

⟹ 2n + 34 = 3n + 21

⟹ 3n - 2n = 34 - 21

⟹ 1n = 13

⟹ n = 13

Substituting ' n ' value in (Eq 1),

⟹ n / n + 8

⟹ 13 / 13 + 8

⟹ 13 / 21

The fraction is 13 / 21

So Its Done !!
