Answer: Mobile charges

P-n junction diode consist of P type of semiconductor and N type of semiconductor. When current flows through the diode electron hole pair recombines to release energy in form of photon.

Due to combination of electron hole pair the region around junction of P and N type of semiconductor shows presence of mobile charges.

As a result, majority charge carriers (free electrons for the N-type semiconductor, and holes for the P-type semiconductor) are depleted in the region around the junction interface, so this region is called the depletion region or depletion zone.
