  • This is due to the phenomenon of refraction.
  • As the light passes from the bottom of the vessel through water (dense medium) to air (rarer medium), it gets refracted.
  • The light thus bends away from the normal (perpendicular).
  • Hence, the bottom of the vessel appears to be raused, that is, the depth of water appears to be less.
