Atomic number of Y is 8.

Mass number of X = 8 + 8 = 16 ( protons + neutrons = mass number ).

Mass number of X and Y is 16 and 17 respectively, while the X and Y is 8. so these are isotopes of each other.

  • what is the atomic number of Y? Atomic number of Y = no. of electrons/protons = 8
  • what is the mass number of X? Mass number of X = no. of protons + no. of neutrons = 8 + 8 =16
  • what is the relation between X and Y? X and Y are isotopes since they have the same atomic number.
