The Dewani rights over Bengal were handed over to British by Mughal Shah Alam in 1765.
When Robert Clive conquered Bengal in Palashi Battle (1757) after the historic betrayal of Mir Zafar, Clive made him the trophy nawab of Bengal to rule there on behalf of the British.
After that Shah Alam II, the Mughal emperor had given East India Company the Diwani right or right to cease revenue and civil rights in 1765.
