The structure labelled X in the section of small intestine is - Villi or Microvilli.

The role of the villi is b. They make a large surface area for absorption.

Villi is a protrusion formed from the epithelial cells present in the lining of the small intestines and thus, they increase the surface area. The purpose of increasing the surface area is that the absorption of nutrients can be done efficiently.

a. They help to move the food along.

Microvilli do not aid in the movement of food. Food moves owing to the different movements exhibited by the muscularis layer present in the small intestine and not microvilli.

C. They protect against bacteria.

Microvilli do not render any protection to the small intestine against bacteria.

d. They move mucus over the surface.

Mucus is secreted by the goblet cells present in the mucosal epithelium of the small intestine. Microvilli do not move this mucus over the surface.
