Given : The diagram shows a large square divided into squares of three different sizes.

To Find : What percentage of the large square is shaded

Solution:

Lets consider

Outer Square of side 20 x 20

Area = 20 x 20  = 400 Sq units

5 middle Size Square length =  Length of 1 large square

Hence Length of side of middle size Square = 20/5 = 4

Area of middle size Square  = 4 x 4 = 16 sq units

8 of them are shaded = 16 x 8 = 128 sq units

Side length in between = 20 - 4 - 4 = 12  unit

2 inner larger size square length  = 12 unit length

=> 1 inner larger size square length = 12/2 = 6 unit

Area of inner larger size square = 6 x 6 = 36 sq units

2 of them are shaded = 2 x 36 = 72 sq units

4 of smaller square  length = 12 unit

=> 1 smaller size square length = 12/4 = 3 unit

Area of smaller size square = 3 x 3 = 9 sq units

4 of them are shaded = 4 x 9 = 36 sq units

Shaded area = 128 + 72 + 36  = 236 Sq units

Area of Square = 400 Square units

percentage of the large square is shaded = (236/400) * 100

= 59 %
