Both the moon and earth are in the shape of spheres.

Surface area of a sphere of radius 'r' =4πr 2

Let d 1be the diameter of the moon and d 2

and be the diameter of the earth.

Let r 1 be the radius of the moon and r 2

be the radius of the earth.

Given d 1 = 4÷1 d 2

=>2r 1 = 4÷1 ×2r 2

=>r 1 = 4÷1 ×r 2

Now, ratio of their surface areas is:

S 1 :S 2

=4πr 1 square :4πr2 square

=r 1 square :r 2 square

=1 square :4 square

=1:16
