The diaphragm is one of the muscles used in respiration. This dome shaped sheet of muscle found in the lower chest cavity just above the abdominal cavity, is often referred to as the principal or primary muscle of respiration.  The diaphragm produces most of the driving force required for both inhalation and exhalation.
The diaphragm works in conjunction with the intercostal muscle to drive gases in and out of the lungs. It is for this reason that it might be considered as the vital respiratory organ.
However, the question of it being the most vital organ in respiration maybe a matter of relativity- its function in relation to the other organs of respiration. In my own view, diaphragm serves a very crucial role in respiration but not independent of the brain respiratory centers, which are very vital. The other respiratory organs like the lungs and the intercostal muscles also contribute very much to the whole process, hence, each is vital in its own way.
